The 2024 “Key Players in the EU Payments Landscape” report by The Payments Association EU (PA EU), written in collaboration with Deloitte and The Paypers offers an exclusive strategic review across EU’s individual payments markets, ranking the key players according to their place in the value chain and financial indicators.

In the first part, Deloitte presents the changing landscape of the payments industry, and gives their view on the state of the payments ecosystem. In the second part, we take a closer look at the players and characteristics of the EU payments landscape. 

A noteworthy novelty compared to last year's report is the exclusive 'Expert Opinion' provided by 32 country-specific professionals for the payments landscape in each EU country. Morevoer, this analysis is carried out at three different levels: global, regional and local with a comprehensive observation of operators and country-specific results. 

The report is complemented by a financial perspective thanks to the exclusive use of the Orbis database (by Bureau van Dijk, a Moody’s Analytics Company) and convenient LinkedIn hyperlinks to easily reach all listed companies.

Some findings of the research include : 

  • Each country within Europe has its distinct payment landscape, resulting in a highly varied European one. Whilst the EU mandates its members to comply with specific regulatory frameworks, individual countries and regions contribute to the most innovation.
  • Whereas the PSD2 intended to drive payment advancement, a disparity in adoption is seen throughout the continent. However, strides are being made in this direction, and initiatives such as the PSD3 and PSR are expected to encourage further development in this sector. Despite the disruption of socio-economic factors preventing regulation harmonisation, the new directives seek to assist in this direction and help level the playing field for all participants in the industry.
